PAUA SHELL (Haliotis Iris).
Found only in New Zealand coastal waters, paua is a mollusc prized for its lustrous colour and flavoursome meat. Maori traditionally used the shell in wood carvings.
Bone
An important material for the Maori. It is said that once you wear a peice of bone next to your skin, some of you passes into the pendant and the pendant becomes one with you. You will notice that over time as the bone absorbs your skins oils that it will change to a creamy yellow colour
Hard, durable and simple to work. It was used for fish hooks, chisels, spear points and many other useful tools. Moa bone, seal ivory and human bone were the main sources.
